Area description

Savudrija is the most western point of Croatia.Visit Savudrija for its wonderful beaches and great tourist offer in the area.
In the 12th century, a bloody battle took place. The Venetian doge with thirty galleys ambushed the twice larger fleet of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
Although the imperial fleet was numerically superior, it could not resist the attack of the skilled Venetians. When the emperor's son Otto realized that there was no escape for his fleet, he hid in an old Roman water cistern.
From that the Italian name Salvore, which translates as 'saved king'.
Savudrija is home to the oldest active lighthouse on the Adriatic, built at the beginning of the 19th century,by the Austrian count Metternich, who dedicated it to a beautiful Croatian noblewoman. It is 36 meters high. The first lighthouse in the world that used gas obtained from the distillation of coal.
Savudrija is located 9 kilometers from the center of Umag and a few minutes from the Slovenian and Italian borders.
